Matthew Lee: AI Law, Civil and Public Law Barrister
Matthew Lee is a barrister (England & Wales) practising at Doughty Street Chambers in London, where he is a member of the specialist AI Team and the Housing, Social Welfare and Property Team. He is the founder and principal author of this site, and also authors The AI Law Reports.
Called to the Bar in 2011, Matthew built his early practice in general common law before specialising in civil and public law, with particular expertise in discrimination claims, housing disputes and property law. He is now one of the UK’s foremost legal voices on the issues arising from artificial intelligence and a prolific author, speaker and commentator at the intersection of AI and the law.
His work and commentary have been cited widely. The Financial Times (FT Alphaville) listed his analysis as “further reading”; The Telegraph quoted him in its report on judicial AI use; and the Law Society Gazette drew on his work in its coverage of fabricated case citations and the professional risks of AI-assisted legal research. He has also been referenced in The Observer on AI-hallucinated legal citations, writes regularly for Counsel magazine, and is cited in academic literature, including the report Invisible No More: How AI Chatbots Are Reshaping Violence Against Women and Girls.
